SUMMARY
OF EACH CHAPTER OF THE POTTER’S WHEEL
Chapter One
Obu came first in school and was prized. He returned home to announce his new feat to his parents. They were happy.
He was the only son and they had looked on for years without a boy until he came around.
He has a 'large head' and they have always said it contains hot brain for books. At four, he had wanted to stop schooling, but his parents didn't take him serious on that as they were too sure that his 'big' head was for book.
Chapter Two
Mazi, Obu's father bought a flute for Obu and while Obu was going to show his friend, Oti, he met his absence and decided to check him at Samuel's house. Samuel was older than the rest of them, and was a very tricky, stubborn and combative fellow. He would beat the boys to get whatever he wanted of them and also made them run compulsory tasks for him. Obu summoned courage to find Oti at Samuel's house but hid the flute. Obu found Oti at Samuel's house and told a lie that Oti's mother sent him to call Oti. It was Oti's opportunity to escape from Samuel's den. Samuel discovered the flute with Obu and seized it. Obu tried to struggle but Samuel has more strength for him. Obu returned home to report the ugly development to his mother. Misus, Obu's mother went after Samuel and slugged it out with his mother. Samuel hid and Misus regained the flute. As Misus made to go, Samuel hid at a corner at targeted sand at Misus' eyes, but it missed her eyes.
Chapter Three
Obu went with friends; David, Oti, Polycarp and others to make masquerade and dance to amazed people who would give them money.
Obu’s mother at first wanted to disapprove her son from joining the group in making masquerade, but later allowed him as she confirmed that it would be safe.
This chapter only showed the reader that Obu’s group in the Umuchukwu village also perform some dancing using masquerade.
Chapter Four
Obu took his father’s bicycle to
learn it. His father had prevented him from learning to ride on his before, but
Obu now took the bicycle in his father’s absence. He mounted it himself, rode a
little distance and fell, sustaining minor injury.
He went to David’s house, an expert who could teach him. David had proper town exposure among the rest in the group, because David had traveled more than the rest. When Obu arrived David’s house, David was sick and was being placed on local anti-malaria therapy made from herbs.Owing to David’s unhealthiness, Obu considered checking at Polycarp’s place, but Polycarp wasn’t around either. Confused as to what next he would do, Obu pushed the bicycle all along, and just as he was trying to mount the bicycle to ride by himself, Samuel appeared on his path. Samuel wrestled the bicycle from him and rode many rounds with it, jeering at Obu. Obu was helpless. Samuel unmounted the bicycle and Obu stood his ground to fight him. Samuel tried to turn Obu’s hand, but Obu gave much resistance until Samuel could not succeed. Samuel abused Obu’s mother and remarked that she was only lucky the sand he targeted at her eyes the last time missed her. Obu cautioned him with boldness not to abuse his mother, took the bicycle and went away thinking that he is now becoming stronger than Samuel could bully.

Chapter Five
Mobile cinema van visited Umuchukwu
as it usually did once a while to show the villagers filmsof the war between
the Cobra (Germans) and the Mongoose (the British). The film always portrayed
the Germans as wicked, but the British as friendly and people of the light. It
always ended with the British winning the war, to the villagers' delight. The
films also showed the Villagers of how their activities of shelling palm kernel
helped the British people win the war. Their palm kernels were taken to the war
front to support the British people. It encouraged the Villagers to continue to
shell more of it. It was the period of World War II and one of the benefits of
the war was that it helped to sweep the Umuchkwu village clean of thieves.
Notorious thieves such as King Kong and Uke were recruited to
join the army at the war front so that they will use their muscles and motivations
at the war fronts instead.
Chapter Six
Obu's Ogbanje Spirit exorcised
Mama Obu (Misus) broke Mazi's sleep to discuss her serious conviction that Obu was an Ogbanje boy as warned by many observers and spiritualists. She recounted to Mazi, all signs sha had mustered to confirm by herself that Obu was an Ogbanje boy, including the strange mark he that came with him on his cheek at birth. The mark was beleived to have been made on him by the last family he visited. Mazi understood her conviction, but would not want to be involved in any atonement because his church catechist may chid him if he should learn of it. Mama Obu invited Nwomiko, a woman reputed for exorcising evil spirits and saving children from the Ogbaje group. Mazi deliberately left the house on the day Nwomiko was to visit. Mama Obu stayed with Nwomiko to supervise the process, but Obu suddenly was nowhere to be found when it was time for Nwomiko to perform the rites. Mama Obu was shocked. It was another confirmation that Obu was truly an Ogbanje boy. Nwomiko revealed that Obu had signed from his spirit world to die immediately he clocked nine (only two weeks to the time), and that he had gone to hide at Oti (his best friend)'s house because of her own presence.Mama Obu went to fetch Obu from Oti's house and the rite was performed. Obu's Ogbanje stone was found near the house where it was buried. Nwomiko assured Mama Obu that the boy would no longer die.
